Webmaster's Note:  The Poem below is as written by Ira Paulus Ison.  I have since discovered that in all likelyhood the name "Isben" should have been "Idsen" instead.  (The letter "b" should have been a "d" and the letters "s" and "d" were transposed).  This letter "I" would probably have been pronounced like the word  "eye".  It could easily have been corrupted from "Eye-d-sen" to "Eye-son" somewhere along the way.

Shropsire records show no incidence of the name "Isben".  There is a headstone in a cemetary in Shropshire with the name "Gidea Idsen".  Next to it is "Martha Idsen", his wife.  The name  "Idsen" would be consistent with the Nordic method of naming, the "sen" suffix having the meaning "son of".  So the name would mean "son of 'Id'."

By the way, there is no record in English Heraldic records of any "Lord" or "Sir" Gideon or even Gidea Isben or Idsen.  The cemetary headstones mentioned above were in the "common" section of the cemetary.  If he had been royalty, he would have been buried in a more elevated section.  I fear the elevation to royal status was an invention of some Ison descendant with delusions of grandeur.

Below is the story in poem form of how the Ison name began.

ISON IS OF FRENCH ORIGIN

By: Ira Paulus Ison

ISLO ISBEN, WAS A NORSE SEAMAN BOLD,

WHO ROVED THE ARCTIC REGIONS COLD

AND TOOK PART IN THE CONQUEST OF NORTHERN FRANCE

TO GIVE HIS OWN A BETTER CHANCE.

THIS NEW LAND WAS NAMED NORMANDY THEN,

SINCE THE CONQUERORS HAD NORSEMEN BEEN

ROLLA WAS THEIR FIRST CHIEF AND GUIDE

AND MANY FRENCHMAN WERE TO THEM ALLIED.

THEY ADOPTED MANY FRENCH TERMS AND NAMES,

EXCHANGED DAUGHTERS TO BECOME WIVES OR DAMES

UNTIL THEY BECAME, A STRONG AND THRIFTY RACE

WHO MUST IN THE WORLD, FIND A CHOSEN PLACE.

WILLIAM THE SIXTH FROM ROLLA ROSE TO POWER

AND STRUCK ENGLAND, AT THE PROPER HOUR,

TO WREST FOR HIMSELF, A GREATER THRONE

AMONG THOUSANDS OF KINDRED OF HIS OWN.

AND THERE IN THIS NEWLY, INVADED LAND,

THE FOLLOWERS OF WILLIAM TOOK THEIR STAND

THOSE WITH HIM, WHO HAD ISBENS BEEN,

HAD THEIR NAME CHANGED TO ISON THEN.

IN THE ANNALS Of ENGLISH HISTORY AND REIGN

MANY PROMINENT PLACES THEY DID GAIN

WHEN THEY ALL SERVED IN GOOD ACCORD,

ONE WAS IN 1700, BY WILLIAM III, APPOINTED LORD.

THIS ONE GIDEON, HAD A SON JOHN,

WHO GREW TO MANHOOD, AS TIME WENT ON;

WAS PAYING ATTENTION TO A COMELY LASS

WHOSE PARENTS WERE OF THE COMMON CLASS.

TO THIS ENGAGEMENT THE OLD SIRE WAS OPPOSED

AND COULD NOT BE BROKEN AS EASILY AS SUPPOSED.

THE FATHER HAD TRIED AND TRIED AGAIN,

AND YET HIS EFFORTS WERE IN VAIN.

THE SON HAD A HEART AND HEAD OF HIS OWN

AND WOULD NOT LEAVE THE LOVELY LASS ALONE

WHEH JOHN ARRIVED TO AGE AS HE HAD HOPED

HE WITH HIS BRIDE TO AMERICA ELOPED.

FIRST THEY SETTLED IN VIRGINIA NEAR THE SEA

AND IN LATER YEARS CROSSED INTO WHAT IS NOW TENNESEE

DESCENDENTS LEARNING OF KENTUCKY'S DESIRE TO BECOME A STATE

BACK TO VIRGINIA A WHILE TO WAIT, TO PASS INTO LAND FOR ESTATE.

IN THIS PRIMATIVE LAND OF FREEDOM AND STATE,

NEWLY ARRIVED IMMIGRANTS WERE TO TRY THEIR FATE

AND HERE IN THIS VIRGIN LAND OF FOREST AND STREAM

THEY FOUND IT REALITY IN NATURE, BUT NOT GOSSIP OR DREAM.

Composed by IRA PAULUS ISON, Harold Sparks's double first cousin once removed. He lived to be 100 years old.

He was the son of Andrew Jackson Ison and Hannah Creech.
