About 1700, as a reward for Gideon's faithfulness and loyalty in the fight for his crown, King William III of England bestowed knighthood upon him. When Gideon's son John wanted to marry a commoner, Gideon forbid it. In spite of this, John's love for this comely lass led him to rebel against his father's wishes and he married her anyway. They soon ran away to America.

The Facts:

Recent research finds no record of a "Sir" or "Lord" Gideon Ison in Shropshire or English heraldic records.  There is apparently a Gidea Idson who died in 1701 and is buried in Shropshire.  Gideon Ison supposedly  died at that same date and place.  Spelling of names in records of those days were  often in error due to the illiteracy of the people of the time.  The "Idson" name could have been one of those errors, or John could have changed the name from "Idson" to "Ison" upon coming to America.

It is my feeling that Gideon may have indeed been the first name of John's father since he gave that name to his first born son.  In addition, the name Gideon appears several times among his descendants.

This particular line of Isons in America began with John and Martha Elizabeth (Huff) Ison. According to the myth,  in spite of Gideon's displeasure with them, they named their first born child after Gideon. I am sure there are many of his descendants in America also, but my particular lineage descended through John, Jr. who was born in 1712. Both Gideon II and John, Jr. were born in Amherst, VA.
