The universally standard file format for Genealogical data is one called the "GEDCOM" format. ( It is a file which has a ".ged"extension ) This is a highly compressed data format which allows a large amount of data to be stored in a small file. Some Genealogy programs may be able to use these files directly, but most of them will convert the Gedcom format to their own format for easier use.
The Gedcom format is very useful for transferring Data between different types of Genealogy Programs. Each program has its own format which none of the others can use, but they can communicate by "Exporting" or "Importing" the file in Gedcom format. In addition to being the common link between Genealogy Softwares, the compressed format takes up much less space for Archiving or transferring by E-Mail attachment.
Nancy and I use a commercial program which does this and much more
very well. If you do not have such a program, you need one to organize
your data. If you don't already use one, you can DOWNLOAD
a demo copy of the one we use and it is FREE. It is a slightly smaller
version, but may be all you need for your work. You will be able to download
and use gedcom files from any source, maybe even this one if plans work
